This app is like Twenty Questions, but for American dialects. Based on your answers to twenty linguistic questions (drawn from Bert Vaux and Scott Golder’s Harvard Dialect Survey) it will tell you where in the USA it thinks you’re from.

At the present moment, shortly after the release of the app, it is possible that the apps predictions may be inaccurate because the data set we used to generate our prediction is not yet large enough. You can help us improve the accuracy of the app by entering your zip code once youve run the program.

Aside from dialect prediction, you can record yourself and listen to recordings of other users from around the USA.

Additionally, the app also has a how/where function. You can select the variant bubbler, for example, and see a map showing where speakers say bubbler for water fountain’. Or you can click on somewhere like New York and see the majority answers for our 20 questions in that area.

Each week we will also make available interesting trivia on language and linguistics on your mobile device.

Have fun exploring the diversity of American English!
